About Our Founder, John Spencer Morton

In spring 2021, we lost our beloved founder, John Spencer Morton. Born in Stowe, Vermont, Spencer moved to Jackson in 2006, quickly becoming a prominent local figure, Orvis-certified instructor, and respected expert in fly fishing, accumulating over 25 years of experience. He earned recognition as a leading guide in the Rocky Mountain region, notably winning “Top Wyoming Guide” at the prestigious Jackson Hole One Fly Tournament in both 2012 and 2013.

After graduating from the University of Vermont in 2005 with a degree in Fisheries Management, Spencer dedicated over a decade to guiding, exploring top fishing destinations worldwide—from his childhood waters of New England to Patagonia, British Columbia, Alaska, Mexico, Central America, Norway, New Zealand, Seychelles, and across the American West. Yet, Jackson Hole remained closest to his heart, where he often returned to guide, appreciating it as one of the world’s finest native trout fisheries.

Spencer was also an accomplished athlete, notably a former Division 1 collegiate hockey player, Triple Crown, and Jackson Hole Pole Pedal Paddle champion. His adventurous spirit took him skiing in the Teton backcountry, hunting elk, and pursuing various game-fish species. His infectious personality and natural humility created enduring friendships wherever he went.

Beyond his accolades, Spencer poured his heart into establishing JHFFS, instilling a culture of excellence, friendship, and continuous learning. His passion remains integral to our identity, guiding our continued dedication to his vision. We proudly carry forward Spencer’s legacy at our Schoolhouse on the Snake River, maintaining a strong commitment to the Jackson Hole community and the sport he cherished.”
